I grew up in Whitefield, skating on the common in the winter, swimming at the state park in the summer, and going to a school where teachers knew not only my name but my parents’ as well. California lured me away for almost 20 years, but each year I came home for what I called my “attitude adjustment.” As I drove up I-93 the traffic would slowly diminish, as would my tension. By the time I saw that wonderful road sign announcing that I was entering the White Mountains, I’d find the speedometer dropping along with my blood pressure. No matter what the weather I would open the car windows and breathe in that incomparable smell of balsam and clean mountain air.
I came home for good two years ago. Visiting friends marvel at the change in me, but after just a few days they’re as mellow as I am. Maybe it’s the walks in the woods, the incredibly quiet nights, or the friendliness of everyone they meet.
