Live Within the Woods

Article and photos John Severance - Watershed to Wildlife

Take the opportunity to live among the wildlife and plants found within our forests, unspoiled and abundant, in their natural state. The southern edges of the boreal forest with dominate red, white, and black spruce, balsam fir, white pine, eastern tamarack mixing with the northern edges of the temporal forest with its eastern hemlocks, red and white oak, sugar maple, and a host of other tree species, offers a unique diverse habitat for untold numbers of associated plants and wildlife.

As the seasons sift in synch with the annual cycle of life so do the sights, smells, sounds, and essences of the natural world. On any given moment you may observe moose, black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse, coyotes, red fox, grey fox, snowshoe hare, northern harrier hawks, red-tailed hawks, too many species to list.

Beyond description, the quiet in these woods is felt as much as heard, and is free to anyone willing to slow down enough to enjoy its palpable and mystical charm. Luckily for us, it can be as close as our back yard.

Here, people continue to live with nature as a sustainable and enjoyable way of life. No billboards, and the only clover leafs are being eaten by deer, now that's my idea of a perfect drive to work.
